The Bacula Systems Story

We know backup and recovery by heart.

Bacula Systems is the leading Enterprise Open Core backup and restore software company, combining Bacula’s enterprise-class open standards software with first-class support and professional services.

Traditional backup and recovery vendors are not architected to cope with a wide variety of systems in an effective way. This usually becomes untenable when a new requirement emerges and suddenly the customer learns there will be custom work or high contracting costs, or that it will not be supported until six to twelve months from now.

Bacula is different. We built our company with a modern, modular architecture that was designed using open principles for the new world of complexity and high data volume. We felt the whole mind-set of the backup industry which was built around metering data volume, was going to be untenable in a world where data volumes need to be free to grow.

Leveraging the millions of downloads of the community project, Bacula Enterprise is by far the most popular Open Core software solution for backup, data recovery and protection of computer data. Our software offers up to ten times lower total cost of ownership compared to proprietary solutions, higher reliability and proven performance in mission-critical enterprise environments. Bacula Systems provides world-class technical support, renowned training courses, and Bacula Enterprise products via the Bacula Systems Subscriptions

Where Does the Name “Bacula” Come From?

The word “Bacula” is combined by its founder Kern Sibbald from 2 separate words: “backup” itself and “Dracula” who comes at night and performs backups, silently taking out the data.
