Position overview

As a result of our rapid international growth, we are seeking to add a Software Release Engineer to package and test our software on GNU/Linux, Windows, *BSD, Solaris and other Unix platforms and to continue the construction of our automated building systems. In this role you will also maintain and support the build system and tools necessary to build, integrate and test software systems that span multiple platforms.

Major responsibilities/Accountabilities

The Release Software Engineer will be responsible for helping build, package, and support Bacula core product and its components. In addition, you'll help promote product quality and innovation through our QA team. You will have the opportunity to contribute code upstream and package building automation.

Major responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Create and maintain packaging for Redhat rpm based systems (yum/dnf/zypper), Debian deb based systems (apt), Windows, *BSD, Solaris, OSX and Unix based systems.
  • Work closely with our Developers and Customer Success teams to keep builds running smoothly to meet customer and market needs.
  • Participate in innovation work to support rapid development and testing of new concepts
  • Assist with internal and external build/packaging/release related projects
  • Monitor, log, analyze, and fix packaging related bugs
  • Integrate new products and 3rd party software into Bacula packages as needed
  • Design & implement solutions for package interdependencies
  • Evaluate new build/packaging/release solutions as needed
  • Manage trouble ticket queues; perform trend and root-cause analysis to resolve groups of trouble tickets; document efforts in the trouble ticket system
  • Quickly respond to security threats and critical bugs
  • Maintain build-related documentation and guidelines for use across the company
  • Provide support, remediation and guidance to Support engineers
  • Communicate effectively both orally and written with stakeholders and technical specialists


  • Good understanding of the Linux operating system
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and technical judgment
  • Proficiency in automating tasks, including shell scripting skills
  • Previous experience with build tools, including make, cmake
  • Experience with package management tools (yum, apt, etc…) and repositories setup
  • Scripting experience with Python, Perl, shell scripting
  • C building/development experience is a plus
  • Experience with software testing methods and technologies
  • Ability to work in a virtual team environment
  • Able to travel in Europe twice a year for Company Meetings
  • Bachelors Degree, Post Graduate Diploma or Professional Degree in Computer Science/Information Technology or equivalent an advantage
