At the previous course, Sébastien Emeriau was one of the attendees that became a Certified Bacula Systems Trainee. Sébastien remarked that the course was a "very good training, with lots of practice sessions through the different exercises. The subject is comprehensively covered by Kern, and reinforced by good documentation". The course also allows time afterwards to discuss your own Bacula implementation with Kern. File deduplication using Base jobs: Interview with Dr. Kern Sibbald
File deduplication is a new feature added to the development 3.0.3 versions, to be released as Bacula version 3.0.3 sometime in 2009.
Kern, what is a 'Base Job'?
A base job is sort of like a Full save except that you will want the FileSet to contain only files that are unlikely to change in the future (e.g. a snapshot of most of your system after installing it). After the base job has been run, when you are doing a Full save, you specify one or more Base jobs to be used. All files that have been backed up in the Base job/jobs but not modified will then be excluded from the backup. During a restore, the Base jobs will be automatically pulled in where necessary.
Is this something that is fairly unique? This is a feature that has been planned for Bacula from the very beginning, and the first of a number of deduplication projects we have planned. One of the big advantages of file level deduplication is that it works even if the data is backed up on a tape. It is a big win if you have multiple systems containing the same base data. Imagine that you have 100 nearly identical Windows or Linux machines containing the OS and user files. Now for the OS part, a Base job will be backed up once, and rather than making100 copies of the OS, there will be only one. If one or more of the systems have some files updated, no problem, they will be automatically backed up. This is a nice optimization that immediately saves time and money.

New Bweb Developments and Demonstrations
Bweb is a Perl based web program that provides a tool to do basic operations and get statistics. It obtains its information from your catalog database and the bconsole program. Along with its ability to follow, in real time, job progression, it can also see Pool/Media occupation, and update volume parameters. Bweb is undergoing rapid development: it is now easier to install and test than before, and you can now delegate tasks; and permit some users to modify volumes, or to follow backup, etc. You can see some short demo movies of Bweb in action on the new Bweb page here.
