June 2009 Edition
Dear Bacula Community,
With the announcement of our new Foundation Course dates, Bacula 3.0 and the impending availability of Bacula Enterprise Edition, there are a lot of things happening at Bacula Systems. I'm especially pleased to announce the strengthening of our partnership with Red Hat. Our new 'Advanced ISV Partner' status with Red Hat means that Bacula Systems products will now be tested and certified on Red Hat as soon as they become available.

The recent successful release of our community edition, Bacula 3.0, has again pushed the boundaries of high performance Open Source backup and restore technology even further. The huge number of downloads now make Bacula the most popular enterprise-grade Open Source backup solution. My thanks go to everyone who has contributed to this landmark release, and we continue to welcome new community members who would like to get involved.
Bacula Systems Announces Foundation Training Course Dates
Our first Foundation Course will be held 7-8-9 July 2009, at the Bacula Systems headquarters in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland. This three day course is designed to help new or potential users of the Bacula Open Source enterprise backup software install and configure a Bacula environment quickly, and operate it effectively for reliable day-to-day backup operations, and restores. Beginning with a brief overview of fundamental concepts, participants learn how to download the source code, compile and install the software, and configure it to operate in a test environment. Registration is now open. To book your seat on this course, or to get more details on the agenda, click here. There's also a fun test to check out if this is the right course for you.

Project Voting: Interview with Dr. Kern Sibbald
Kern, what exactly is the Bacula Project Voting all about?
Project voting enables the Bacula community to decide, democratically, what new features should be developed as a priority. Requests for new features are submitted by users, and the community then votes to arrive at a final order of priority. The developers can then see what features are the most important (and the least) to implement. We cannot guarantee that any particular feature will be implemented for the next version, but the voting results are an extremely important guideline for us. It's as simple as that!
What did you think about the results?
Well, as you can see from the list, it means that there are going to be yet more exciting developments coming up in Bacula. Actually, the process has already started. That's the great thing about Bacula - the user community is extremely vibrant, and as the community grows, so does the speed of Bacula's development. I love it!
|
Do you intend to continue with the voting system?Absolutely. Bacula is all about giving the community what they need, and staying true to the values of honest Open Source. In addition to that, it provides Bacula with a pretty solid roadmap that is public to everyone. My thanks go out to all of those who voted. Is Bacula the only Open Source backup solution that has such a democratic feature voting policy?
As far as I know, yes.
The preliminary results of the vote are available here.

Developer interview: Victor Hugo dos Santos
Victor Hugo dos Santos recently created a "Howto" to describe how run a backup of Oracle Databases with Bacula, without any downtime.
|
 |
Victor, What made you get involved with doing back-up of Oracle DB to Bacula?
Originally, Data Base Administrators performed Oracle backups with "tar" software and manual scripts. But this process gradually changed, and DBA's were requesting large disk space to perform new backup schema before sending the backup to type. After reading various posts in bacula-user and bacula-devel lists, I came to the conclusion that there was a definite possibility to run a better backup of Oracle with Bacula and LVM without the need of big disk space.
What were the most important things you learned? I've worked with Linux since 2000, but my knowledge in Oracle was limited. But every day, one learns something new, and now I have learned much more in Linux, Oracle and Bacula. The beauty of the Open Source Community is that one both delivers and receives at the same time. For example: after sending the first 'how-to' draft to the bacula-users list, I have received various replies that have shown me new options to use in Bacula that I was not aware of.
What are the most exciting points about being able to backup to Oracle DB with Bacula? I use Bacula to backup various servers, and the expected advantages of using Bacula in this new way have materialized in every aspect. For a System Administrator, it is much more complicated to have to manage a large mix of tools to backup all the server data. Our IT Management is now very grateful that a single, unique tool is capable of operating all the backup jobs in the company, reducing our costs and increasing reliability. Now, our goal is to have "all" backups under just one system: Bacula!
What is the main advice you would give anyone wanting to do the same? Participate in the Open Source Community. That is a rich source of knowledge. There are always people that have the same problem as you, and other people that already have a solution to this problem. So; share to win!
