March 2009 Edition
Dear Bacula Community,
With the current explosive growth in the amount of business data, an increase in regulatory and legal accountability, and IT departments' need to reduce costs, Bacula Systems is seeing a sharp increase in adoption in the enterprise. Increasingly, companies refuse to be locked in to proprietary data formats, finding 'vendor lock-in' to be incompatible with a valid backup strategy.
Bacula Systems is making big strides forward in taking Open Source Backup and Restore to a new level of relevance in the industry.

Bacula's technical capabilites, enterprise readiness, and professional support are all undergoing rapid development, and Bacula will continue to lead with both innovation and customer satisfaction. Look out for some important announcements from Bacula in the coming weeks.
Bacula Systems Expands its Partner Program
This month sees the introduction of the Bacula Systems "Ready" Partner level. It enables small I.T. services companies that already have professional-level knowledge of Bacula to become a Bacula Systems Partner without overstretching their resources, and have the reassurance of Bacula Systems support behind them and their customers. Although marketing support is higher for Approved and Premier Partners, the introduction of the Bacula Systems Ready Partner level presents a great opportunity for smaller I.T. services companies to resell the Bacula Systems Subscription and grow revenue from their existing customer base, as well as gaining new customers.
I.T. services companies interested in finding out more should contact Bacula Systems.

Interview with Dr. Kern Sibbald
Kern, what's happening in the Bacula Project right now?
Bacula 3.0 is on the cusp of being released. It's a lot of work at the moment, but we are almost there. 3.0 is a major release, but I am proud to say we are pretty much on schedule with it.
The last newsletter talked about features in 3.0: 'Accurate Backup', 'Copy Job', 'ACL Updates' and 'Extended Attributes'. That's already a lot of new features. Is there anything more?
There's a lot more. Shared objects is one example. In version 3.0, a default build of Bacula will create the libraries as shared objects, rather than static libraries - as was previously the case. The shared libraries are built using libtool so it should be quite portable.
|
What's the advantage of Shared objects?
An important advantage of using shared objects is that on a machine with the Directory, File daemon, the Storage daemon, and a console, you will have only one copy of the code in memory rather than four copies. Also the total size of the binary release is smaller since the library code appears only once rather than once for every program that uses it; this results in significant reduction in the size of the binaries particularly for the utility tools.
Another important feature is Virtual Backup. Bacula's virtual backup feature is often called Synthetic Backup or Consolidation in other backup products. It permits you to consolidate the previous Full backup plus the most recent Differential backup and any subsequent Incremental backups into a new Full backup. This is accomplished without contacting the client by reading the previous backup data and writing it to a volume in a different pool.
Are these features important for large enterprises? Certainly. Actually, a lot of customers have been asking us for help with either Bacula Pilot projects in their enterprises, or Best-Practice implementations of our technology. So we have made some new consulting services available at low cost; the Bacula Systems 'Pilot Package', and 'Implementation Package'. The idea of these packages is to give the enterprise a very low risk, low-cost way to get Bacula up and running in a matter of days.
