As a long time ISV partner of SUSE, Bacula Systems were pleased to be invited by SUSE to join the SLES 11 SP2 testing program. SLES is one of two main Linux distributions officially supported by Bacula Systems’ flagship data protection product; Bacula Enterprise Edition.

Including the Linux 3.0 kernel while maintaining application compatibility is vital in order to guarantee broad adoption of this new Linux release. Together with SUSE, our R&D team worked out the technical details in a timely manner and we are excited to announce that SLES 11 SP2 will be included in the Supported Platform matrix of our next major release; Bacula Enterprise Edition v6.

Bacula Systems Receives US$5 Million to Deliver Open Source Enterprise Backup and Restore Technology to Large Data Centers

Funds will finance the release of new backup and restore software and growth of the sales organization

Yverdon-Les-Bains, Switzerland – June 9th, 2011 — Bacula Systems®, the world’s leading provider of commercial open source backup and restore software, announced today that it has completed its CHF 4.5 million (over US$5 million) fund-raising.

The funding has been raised from a syndicate assembled by KM Capital Partners and from the Swiss Canton of Vaud, through its Economic Development arm, DEV.

The funds will accelerate the company’s software development program, and further grow its sales and channels services to provide more sophisticated support to its business partners.

“I am proud that the Bacula open source project has achieved over 1.5 million downloads since its conception in 2002”, said Bacula’s author, Bacula Systems’ Founder and CEO, Kern Sibbald, “Bacula Systems is poised to extend its lead in the commercial open source backup and restore space through a series of releases of new, value-add technologies and plugins that complement its highly scalable, network backup and restore solution”.

Emphasizing its commitment to the rapid growth of its sales team and increased sales support to its partner and reseller networks, Bacula Systems also announced today the appointment of Aristide Carracio as its new Director of Sales and Marketing, and Stéphane Schweizer, as its EMEA Sales and Marketing Manager.

By eliminating both vendor lock-in and license fees, Bacula Enterprise Edition reduces costs and offers a far lower total cost of ownership than proprietary vendors. Immediately upon the deployment of Bacula Enterprise Edition, Bacula Systems clients worldwide have found that modernizing their backup and restore technology produces measurable increases in network efficiency, data protection levels and, significantly, up to 70% reduction in costs. With recent deployments in large hosting providers, banks and telecommunications companies, and the high-end specification of its backup and restoration enterprise software, Bacula Systems’ commercial open source alternative is rapidly emerging as the solution of choice among large data centers that need to reduce spiraling IT costs.

Footnote: Actual amount raised is 4.5 million CHF (Swiss Francs).

Enterprise-class, Open Source Network Backup and Restore Solution Brings High-Value, Low-TCO Opportunity to IT Departments by overcoming cost and scalability barriers.

Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland – Sept. 14, 2010 – Bacula Systems®, the world’s leading provider of commercial open source backup and restore software, announced today the availability of Bacula Enterprise Edition 4.0TM, delivering advanced backup features from open source software for the first time.

The announcement continues Bacula System’s commitment to offering a highly scalable, modern, open source backup and restore solution to the enterprise, through accelerated development of the Bacula project, and by delivering highest quality professional support to the IT industry.

The primary features of the Bacula Enterprise Edition 4.0 include:

BWeb Enterprise Management Center to manage multiple data centers.

Scalability up to thousands of servers and clients.

Modern, modular and multi-threaded design.

Exceptionally stable network backup and data verification in large IT environments.

Advanced levels of security built in every layer.

Backup to disk, tape, and robotic media libraries.

High availability in a clustered environment

File level deduplication.

MySQL and Postgres database compatibility.

Improved Microsoft VSS functionality.

New Windows plug-ins such as registry, systemstate, Active Directory, Exchange and SharePoint.

Windows bare metal recovery.

Bacula Systems Support Services.

Long term support for Enterprise Edition 4.0 – minimum of 4 years.

Since Bacula Systems announced earlier this year that Bacula had passed the one million download milestone (now 1.33 million), more large enterprises, such as Netlog, have chosen to adopt Bacula Systems’ Subscription services and enterprise-class solution in order to modernize their IT environment and drive costs down. Netlog, an online social portal available in 37 languages with more than 63 million members throughout Europe, found the licensing terms of its proprietary backup software inflexible, inhibiting its ability to scale to meet market demands. “We needed to find a highly scalable product with modern architecture, that reduced costs and was flexible enough to support all our systems, so Bacula was the best backup product we could use” said Nicolas Van Eenaeme, Director of ITS, Netlog.

Bacula Systems earlier this year launched its Accelerated Development Initiative, which is focused on developing enterprise-class features and modules for the Bacula project to further bring open source backup and restore to large enterprises. As part of this initiative, Bacula Systems is today announcing the BWeb Enterprise Edition, a multipurpose web-based graphical user interface management and monitoring tool for Bacula Enterprise Edition. “The Bacula Systems Accelerated Development Initiative has resulted in many new technical features, including the ‘BWeb Enterprise Management Center’ which can manage multiple Bacula installations for very large enterprises” said Dr. Kern Sibbald, CTO and Chairman of Bacula Systems, and founder of the Bacula project. “Modules for added Oracle backup capabilities are also near completion, and will further add to the value of the Bacula Systems Subscription”, added Sibbald.

Bacula Systems also today announced the availability of its new service to small and medium businesses: a special ‘Lite’ subscription for small deployments that gives access to leading Bacula engineers and support team, and access to Bacula patches – all available through its web portal. “Bacula Systems offers the most popular open source backup product in the market today, and frees the enterprise from vendor lock-in.” said Jack Griffin CEO, Bacula Systems. “No company should feel forced to pay the outrageous licensing fees typical of today’s proprietary backup vendors. Our customers only pay for real, direct value; not licensing”, added Griffin.
